If you’re planning on doing an elemental diet, or even just drinking a shake or two per day, then it is important to learn to distinguish the difference between normal bowel/body changes from elemental shakes, versus signs your body is intolerant, or allergic, to one or more of the ingredients in the shake.
Do not persist in ingesting something your body is allergic or intolerant to, and risk triggering a flare-up of your gut issues!
Elemental, or semi-elemental shakes are liquid, pre-digested nutrient shakes. They are the closest equivalent to breastmilk that is available, and they give the bowel a chance to rest and heal. They also facilitate detoxification, healthy weight gain, or weight loss (depending on your goal), and can provide a clearance period, to then carry out a systemic re-introduction of foods – to test for food allergies.
But what if you are allergic, or intolerant, to the shake itself?
Here is the range of reactions you might experience if you are allergic to a substance:
- Nasal congestion, or a runny nose, or sneezing
- Hives (reddish, swollen, itchy areas on the skin)
- Redness of the skin, particularly around the mouth or eyes, or a persistent dry, itchy rash
- Itchy mouth or ear canal
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Slight, dry cough
Severe reactions include lips, tongue or throat swelling, shortness of breath or wheezing, trouble swallowing, turning blue, feeling faint or weak or confused or passing out, chest pain, weak pulse, or anaphylactic shock.
Now, if you look at this list, the only symptom in common with a ‘normal’ response to an elemental shake is the Diarrhea. Except that what you experience with a solely liquid-source food is not actually diarrhea… it is just the natural result of eating nothing but liquid food.
Other common results of being on an exclusively (i.e. no other food) elemental diet, are bloating and sometimes low energy (others experience an increase in energy). If you’re experiencing loose diarrhea-like stools or abdominal bloating, here’s what you can do to help counter those effects.
So when you are thinking of going on an elemental diet, it is very important to test a sample, or a few servings of the elemental shake first – to ensure your body likes the ingredients. You may even want to consume just 1-2 shakes per day for a week first – to allow your body to slowly adjust to this new food source, and at the same time to check for tolerance levels.
The elemental shake I formulated, Absorb Plus, has 43 different ingredients, but the ingredients most likely to be the culprits in an allergy or intolerance are the protein and the maltodextrin components. I’ve used cassava root (tapioca) maltodextrin in Absorb Plus and the protein source is either whey isolate (casein-free and lactose-free since those are the top allergen for those with a dairy allergy or intolerance), or, sprouted brown rice protein (typically well tolerated).
So you would definitely want to test both the Vegan and the regular Absorb Plus to see how your body responds and which one it prefers – or maybe your body will do best if you alternate between them?
But let’s say you’re allergic to the tapioca maltodextrin in Absorb Plus, in that case, use this guide to formulate your own elemental shake according to which ingredients you can tolerate. Or use a free-form amino acid elemental shake (but it will be very difficult to maintain or gain weight without a di-peptide bond protein source) that does not contain maltodextrin. Or, use these whole-food shakes instead, if you can.
This week I cut back on the Absorb Plus due to a flare up. I did call customer care and he told me to drink just 2 scoops and it helped and now I have been eating small amounts of regular food. No meat. I experienced itchy ears as well. I plan to use the two scoops twice a day and test the waters.
Absorb Plus has helped alot.
Hi Jerilyn, Great news! Thanks so much for sharing and we’re looking forward to hearing more about your progress!

Hi Jini,
Can you get flare ups from one of the components in the absorb plus if you are allergic to them, and can you have a flare up from a detoxing while using the shake during the first couple of days?My just recently started to use, after 2 days of using she told she had a feeling of her intestines burning and her bleeding increased a little bit, before it was reduced on the banana yogurt diet, any ideas what it could be?
Hi Ivan,
Stomach pain can be a side-effect of intolerance, and the only symptom in common with a ‘normal’ response to an elemental shake is the Diarrhea – the natural result of eating nothing but liquid food. Jini strongly suggests not to persist in ingesting something your body is allergic or intolerant to, and risk triggering a flare-up of your gut issues.
That being said, pulled directly from this post per Jini, “when you are thinking of going on an elemental diet, it is very important to test a sample, or a few servings of the elemental shake first – to ensure your body likes the ingredients. You may even want to consume just 1-2 shakes per day for a week first – to allow your body to slowly adjust to this new food source, and at the same time to check for tolerance levels. The elemental shake I (Jini) formulated, Absorb Plus, has 43 different ingredients, but the ingredients most likely to be the culprits in an allergy or intolerance are the protein and the maltodextrin components. In this case, she may want to give the vegan version of Absorb Plus a try to see how her body responds. You can find it here: https://shoppe.listentoyourgut.com/absorb-plus-vegan/
If perhaps she is allergic to the tapioca maltodextrin in Absorb Plus, in that case, she can use this guide to formulate her own elemental shake according to which ingredients she can tolerate: https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/create-your-own-elemental-bowel-rest-shake/
She can also use a free-form amino acid elemental shake (but please be aware it will be very difficult for her to maintain or gain weight without a di-peptide bond protein source) that does not contain maltodextrin. Or, use these whole-food shakes instead, if she can: https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/use-common-foods-to-heal-inflammatory-bowel-disease/
I hope this information helps! Best of luck to her on her healing journey.

Hi there,
I’m heading into my fifth week on an elemental diet, drinking only Absorb Plus and vegetable broth. I’m feeling great and haven’t had any of my flair up symptoms in almost five weeks! The one issue that I’ve been having over the past two weeks is slightly itchy/crawling skin. It reminds me of the feeling of having restless leg syndrome (which I had a lot when I was pregnant) but the tickling feeling is on my arms, legs and face. I did have a mild rash on my arms for few days ago but I chalked that up to putting too much Epsom salts in my bath and it has since diapered. Unfortunately, the all over itchy/crawly feeling remains. I really don’t believe I’m having an allergic reaction to Absorb Plus and I’d really like to finish the entire 6 weeks. Any thoughts on why my body is reacting like this while on the elemental diet.
Hmmm that is puzzling Ashely and I’ve never heard of that. Here’s a checklist I would run through:
– make sure you’re on Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol and high dose Natren. Possibly the probiotic retention enema?
– maybe you need extra magnesium – nano/atom-sized magnesium will not affect your bowel
– check all possible environmental causes – everything on your skin, pesticides, herbicides, etc
– check levels of WiFi/cellphone radiation in your home/work. This is interesting:
“The parents of one 12-year-old boy recently filed a lawsuit in Massachusetts against his private school, claiming that a new “industrial-capacity Wi-Fi” system at the school led to their child’s health problems, Courthousenews.com reported.
The boy suffered from headaches, itchy skin and rashes, and eventually nose bleeds, dizziness and heart palpitations, the suit said, according to Courthousenews. The symptoms, which doctors could not diagnose, arose only during school hours.” https://www.livescience.com/52978-electromagnetic-hypersensitivity-cause-unclear.html
And then check out this list:
http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/health/health-concerns/why-am-i-so-itchy-7-health-conditions-that-cause-you-to-itch-11363940466284
If you suspect Scabies or something else infectious, the Wild Oregano Oil Protocol should take care of it. You could also try applying WOO topically to an arm or leg and seeing if there’s any effect. A 6:1 dilution should be sufficient (6 drops organic olive oil to 1 drop wild oregano oil).
Let me know if you figure it out!
Hi Jini,
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I’ve spent the last week trying to figure what the culprit is and I have narrowed it down to a reaction to Quercetin or Hesperidin – once I stopped adding those two bioflavinoids to my shake… the itching stopped.
Also, I’m so happy to say that I’m finishing up the 6 week elemental diet phase of the IBD remission diet and just received my C-Reactive protein blood work. I tested the day before I started the diet and two days before finishing the diet (about 5.5 weeks later) and my levels went from 12mg/L to 1 mg/L. I’m still eagerly awaiting my Cal Protectin results but am also very optimistic that this test will also reflect the progress I’ve made on the diet.
I can’t tell you how much better I feel and how excited I am to see that my labs are proof of my healing! I can’t wait to see the look on my gastroenterologist’s face when he also sees my results!
Best,
Ashley
That is wonderful Ashley! So glad you pin pointed what the issue was, and that you have had such success with the IBD Remission diet thus far!
To continued good health. =)
I have a question regarding homemade recipes…what fat sources are okay? Why is flax seed oil recommended? What makes that so special? I am partial to coconut oil and olive oil. Fine to take? Thanks.
Hi Tate – Coldpressed oils are all compatible with the elemental diet, but look for one that is high in omega-3‘s for the anti-inflammatory effect. Most of the fat we consume is in unusable forms, which irritates our digestive system. But cold-pressed flax oil is absorbed very quickly, and even people with a marked ‘fat-intolerance’ have no problem with it. Sometimes people who don’t tolerate flax oil will tolerate MCT oil instead, and others find Udo’s oil easiest to tolerate. You just have to test it and see – but make sure you use a cold pressed healthy anti-inflammatory oil.
would headaches count as an allergic reaction?
Hi, ragevan! Headaches are generally not classified as allergic reactions. Allergic responses typically manifest as skin rashes, itching, swelling, etc. If you have concerns about an allergic reaction, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a more accurate assessment. Best!
I am using absorb plus vegan unsweetened as a supplement to gain weight that I’ve lost with SIBO. I notice my upper stomach seem irritated (burning) and my rectum burns and itches after having a BM. Coildvthis be an allergic reaction?
Is the quality/consistency of your bowel movements different from your normal/previous bowel movements? Also, I would ingest Natren Megadophilus & Digesta-Lac in powder form before drinking a shake and see if that alters the ‘burning’ sensation. Lastly, what are you mixing the shake with – just water? And which oil are you using? These are all elements that need to be examined to start narrowing down the cause.
Oh and one last thing: Any new or intensifying stressors since you started on the shakes? Sometimes we can attribute reactions to foods or supplements, but they’re actually caused by emotional/psychological events. This is why during my healing journey, I would test a substance a minimum of THREE times, under completely different circumstances – so that I could isolate that the effect was ONLY due to the substance and nothing else that was happening in my life, environment, ingesting, etc. You have to be your own detective. Hope that helps 🙂
