My dear friend – EMR expert Jeromy Johnson – is a hot springs connoisseur. He has visited health spas all over the world and I asked him for his list of the best hot springs in California.
Keep in mind, we are not talking about the best resorts; we are talking about places you can go to obtain real health benefits. And since Jeromy is electrohypersensitive, all of these spas are also low radiation spots; which further contributes to the health benefit! Especially as our world becomes so saturated with WiFi and cell phone radiation.
Every one of these hot springs is clothing optional, all have hiking and bodywork sessions available. Some are open to day-use visits or overnight stays. So here we go…
1. Wilbur Hot Springs in Northern California
Jeromy tells me that Wilbur has the best water – full of sulfur and lithium from the geothermal springs!
Wilbur has a lot of great information on their website so you can really research all the health benefits, with beautiful hikes through their 1800 acre nature reserve, and yoga classes. They have a spring-fed swimming pool, an outdoor hot mineral flume and a dry sauna.
Guests stay in light and airy cabins and prepare their own meals in their dining area, so you can cater to your own diet.
2. Orr Hot Springs
Orr Hot Springs near Ukiah is available for day-use or overnight stays. Like most of these hot springs, clothing is optional.
It is a fairly rustic facility on 27 acres, with various cabins and yurts to choose from:
3. Sierra Hot Springs
Sierra is located less than an hour from Tahoe, so cross-country skiing is an option in winter. Guests stay in the main lodge, or they can camp on the 600 acre property. There is also a hotel 1 mile away. The various pools are beautiful, or you can also have the spring water pumped in fresh to a private bath. Again, clothing is optional.
4. Esalen Hot Springs
Esalen hot springs is part of a large spiritual teaching/workshop center in Big Sur; right on the coast between Carmel and Cambria. It has an Art Barn, a Bookshop, various hiking trails, a comfortable lodge and of course, amazing hot spring pools:
5. Tassajara at the San Francisco Zen Center
Tassajara is located about 2 hours drive southeast of Carmel. It has a Japanese-style bathhouse with a sunning deck and steam room. Hiking, yoga and zen meditation are available.
You can stay in a stone room, cabin or yurt.
6. Harbin Hot Springs
Harbin is Jeromy’s favorite rest and retreat place, just north of San Francisco. Harbin is a digital-free retreat, with cell service only at the Reception area. It is also clothing-optional, with lots of hiking available:
Pools:
Saunas:
Along with a steam room, yoga, bodywork treatments and various spa services.
So there you go, a variety of facilities to suit any budget the next time you want to book a healing retreat for yourself. Make sure to book bodywork treatments well in advance as they do fill up quickly.
