We often receive this question from our readers: Should I add oil to my Absorb Plus shakes? What exactly are the benefits? Will it still be considered elemental?
Cold-pressed oils are all compatible with the elemental diet, but look for one that is high in omega-3‘s for the anti-inflammatory effect. Most of the fat we consume is in unusable forms, which irritates our digestive system. But cold-pressed flax oil is absorbed very quickly, and even people with a marked ‘fat-intolerance’ have no problem with it. Sometimes people who don’t tolerate flax oil will tolerate MCT oil instead, and others find Udo’s oil easiest to tolerate. You just have to test it and see – but make sure you use a cold-pressed healthy anti-inflammatory oil.
Since the 1950s, most westerners have been severely deficient in Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), which leads to a wide variety of problems in the body. However, regular ingestion of flax oil, fish oil, or coconut (MCT) oil cures this deficiency.
Flax oil has a very mild, unobtrusive taste and is also great in salad dressings, drizzled overcooked vegetables, or stirred into dips, salsa, or yoghurt. Do not heat the oil or use it to fry foods, as this destroys the Essential Fatty Acids. You can safely supplement up to 8-10 tablespoons per day of flax oil, and a good maintenance dose is 2-4 tablespoons per day.
Cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring also contain high levels of Omega-3 and other ‘good fats’ (EFA, GLA) needed by the body. So you can either eat the fish or take fish oil or cod liver oil as a supplement. The other major benefit is that Omega-3 is a powerful anti-inflammatory and fish oil has been used solely in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to induce remission in patients with Crohn’s Disease (The New England Journal of Medicine, June 13, 1996).
Here is an assortment of healthy oils that are beneficial – not just for people with digestive diseases, but for ALL people. If your disease is active, or if you’re pregnant or lactating, then you need high amounts of each of these beneficial oils. Remember, the cell membrane is 40% fat! So be sure to ingest lots of these healthy oils each day. They will not cause you to become fat (adipose tissue); your body will use them for vital functions like skin, hair, connective tissue, hormonal pathways, etc.
We recommend you add Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil blend (preferred), or, organic, unrefined, cold-pressed, flaxseed oil or MCT oil to your Absorb Plus shakes to increase Omega 3 and ‘good fat’ (Essential Fatty Acid) levels in your body. Good fats are an essential part of a healthy diet and body, and adding Udo’s, MCT or flax oil to Absorb Plus will increase the calorie count per shake and result in a tastier shake!
There is no oil in Absorb Plus for three reasons:
- Imix Nutrition wanted the product to work for people who have a complete fat intolerance.
- Any cold-pressed oil needs to be kept refrigerated and in a dark container at all times or the fat denatures and becomes rancid.
- As different people can tolerate different levels of fat (dependent on type and location of illness and degree of inflammation), Imix felt it best to allow you to add the level of fat that’s right for you.
Since there is no fat in Absorb Plus, you really should add the Udo’s, MCT or flax oil if at all possible (1 tsp – 1 tbsp per shake, depending upon tolerance. The more the better!). Adding Udo’s Oil and pouring over lots of ice also improves the taste. Some people also prefer mixing the flavors, as they feel that tastes better than a single flavor. For example, 2 scoops of Chocolate Royale and 2 scoops of Mixed Berry.

**Note, we have had many readers write in asking if they can add more than the recommended number of scoops in their shakes – and if there are any downsides to this. In my book, The IBD Remission Diet, I talk about why I formulated Absorb Plus to have roughly 27 grams of protein per serving. I based that calculation on bodybuilders’ protein intake. Because if you ingest more protein than your body can utilize, it will excrete it via urine. Thus, I recommend my readers not ingest more than 1 shake per hour for efficient protein utilization. If you would like to “bulk up” your shakes, the above healthy oils are a great way to do so. And be sure to drink your shakes slowly for maximum nutrient retention/utilization!
How do you feel about olive oil?
I’ve used it, but it is a heavier oil so test for tolerance limits. And make sure it is Organic Extra-Virgin cold-pressed. The best-tasting olive oil is from Italy, I’ve found.
Whatever, i don’t know are you trying to make it taste better
This is from a person that totally cured his crohn’s, It took three years for me, I feel great now and can eat what ever i want but i got to watch my weight.
I should wright a book i have the answer.
Udos oil, flax and cod liver oil seem to give me horrible brain fog, anxiety and depression. They have all increases since taking them. Will stop all and evaluate.
Hi Katherine! Sorry to hear this! You may want to look into this article from Jini on the different types of fats and see if there is another you can tolerate: https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/good-healthy-fats/
Fats for some are really hard to digest, so if this is the case I always took Jini’s enzymes with each meal that had fats. This helped digest it well, and maybe for your situation could help?
She offers them in capsules or chewable tablets:

I really hope you get relief soon!

Out of the 3 oils mentioned, which one would taste the best with the vanilla flavors and which one would be the lightest to the stomach, and with Asorb Plus I wanted to use 2% milk, would that be better then water, or is there other liquids that can be mixed with the powder.
Hi! Great question! If I was you, and the other oils are too hard on your tummy, you may even want to consider coconut oil or cold-pressed olive oil. Vanilla and coconut oil combo are great tasting if you are looking for flavor. 🙂
Also, you can only use filtered water to mix with Absorb Plus – otherwise, it will no longer be elemental, or pre-digested.

I just started with the vegan unsweetened vanilla absorb plus to supplement a temporary no fiber diet until my diarrhea goes away. I tried water with flax oil and found it very distasteful. I find it much easier to use rice dream milk. Am I still getting full benefit doing this? I will start with the dairy version (berry) soon. Maybe that one will be easier with water. Suggestions? Thank you
Hi Eileen, thanks for reaching out. You can use rice milk if you prefer, however, this will no longer make it elemental – so it won’t be “pre-digested” and may not provide the maximum benefit for bowel rest.
There are many people who have written in with success following a half-elemental diet, however, which includes Absorb Plus shakes and well-tolerated, low-fiber foods that still provide enough rest for your GI tract/bowels to heal. Here is a blog post with more info if you are interested: https://blog.listentoyourgut.com/reader-story-my-success-using-a-half-elemental-diet/
You can use any cold-pressed oil in your Absorb Plus shakes, however, we have found flax oil/Udo’s oil to be the most well tolerated – as many people with gut disorders can also have a fat intolerance. In this case it is best to see how your body reacts and what is best for you, which can take some trial and error. I hope this helps!
Is the absorb plus truly an elemental diet? My GI isn’t accepting it. What about hemp oil?
Hello, thanks for reaching out. Absorb Plus uses Whey Isolate or Sprouted Brown Rice Isolate. These are not a whole protein but rather a peptide. According to some medical dictionaries, whey isolate is considered “elemental,” but according to others, it is considered “semi-elemental.”
In terms of taking this into the realm of practical application, Jini stands behind what she first discovered using elemental diets for herself (and consequently wrote about in The IBD Remission Diet), and that is that whilst free-form amino acids are considered more ‘hypo-allergenic, they are not always best for inducing disease remission – because the person cannot gain weight and address malnutrition using only free-form amino. This becomes especially important for people with malnutrition due to multiple bowel movements or with children on an elemental diet who need to make up for lost growth and height.
You can find more details on page 12 of Jini’s book, and of course let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns: https://listentoyourgut.com/wp-content/uploads/ibd-remission-diet-ch1.pdf
We will also be launching a new version of Absorb Plus containing free form amino-acids, so this will be considered fully elemental – stay tuned, as we are launching very soon! I hope this answers your question.
Would coconut oil be acceptable?
Hi Becca! Thanks for reaching out! Yes, MCT or unrefined coconut oil is an example of a good fat oil and definitely acceptable as long as you can tolerate it. Hope that helps!
I have J-pouch and had been suffering from anal fissures for over a year. I started the Absorb plus with samples and I was ok with it. May be some loose bowl. I normally go 4 to 5 times because of the Pouch. When I got the larger version the 1st shake with 4 scoops and 1 tblsp of MCT oil and next day I had very burning Bowl movement. I cut back to only one and started to increase every 2 days. After 3 I am having issues. Is there such a thing as body having problem with Protein. With the comfrey ointment my fissures are in very good shape . I need to increase my weight and get more calories. I am eating sprouted item that seem to work fine so far but wanted further eliminate as muscle as possible. I am basically on a partial elemental diet. Flaxseed also seems to give me burning stools. Any suggestions. Thx.
Hi Manhar, It could be a die-off effect or an intolerance to the ingredients. Jini discussed more about this in the link below with guidance on how to ease yourself into the diet. I hope you’re feeling better.
