How’s Your Body Voltage? Is Your House a Healing Place?

Did you know that your body has its own electromagnetic field? This is why your doctor may use an EKG to test your heart function – it records the electrical signals of your heart.

As awareness increases around topics like earthing, or grounding, you also have to look at the flip side of that conversation: Why and how are our bodies getting so overloaded with electromagnetic fields that we are recognizing this as a universal problem?

If you yourself are electrohypersensitive (EHS) then you already know a lot about the various forms of electrical and magnetic fields that can negatively, or positively, affect the body.

EMF Radiation in human body

For the rest of us, lets go over some basics and what you can do to ensure your home is a healing space, and not yet another toxic burden on your body.

Electric fields are created by voltage, so they are present in electrical appliances and cords whenever the electric cord to an appliance or lamp is plugged into an outlet (even if the appliance is turned off).

This is why you may have heard health experts telling you to unplug everything in your bedroom before you go to sleep.

So if your house is filled with electrical fields (how many plugs and appliances do you have?) and your body has it’s own electrical field, then is your house having any negative effects on your health?

Is There Dirty Electricity in Your Home?

Let me tell you about my own family’s experiments with electrical fields at our house. We hired a consultant who’d been trained by Bau Biologie, along with his experienced electrician.

They went through our entire house and found insane levels of dirty electricity in the kitchen (2,000 times higher than the safety limit), and a few other places.

After fixing all the issues in our house, they determined that the biggest problem was coming from our city electricity box. So we called the city and sure enough, their technician had not done a good job with the wiring from the main box to our house, and so they fixed things on their end too.

Your city electricity provider will be motivated to fix things at their end because dirty electricity costs them money.

A common problem in houses is the wiring at the plugs is not tight enough. If there are gaps between two wires (that should be twisted tight together) then the electricity can arc or jump between the wires. In our house, all the plugs at waist level or higher were done properly. The plugs near the ground were all poorly done.

They explained this was likely because senior electricians don’t want to work down on their knees – so they give that job to the junior electrician, or sometimes just a ‘skilled worker’.

Testing Your Body’s Voltage

The other test that made a big impression on me, was when he had us stand up, holding a short rod of copper hooked up to his body voltage testing device.

He was able to read my body’s electrical field as transmitted through the copper rod with wires leading to his meter. Then he had me lie down on my bed and tested me again. My body tested fine in both positions.

At the most basic level, we all understand that certain materials ground or neutralize electricity – like rubber, or soil. And we know that certain substances conduct or channel electricity – like water or metal (lightening rods).

Well when we tested my daughter, keep in mind we had unplugged everything in the room, as soon as she lay down on her bed, her body voltage jumped significantly. Now, sleep is a time of rest.

body voltage and EMF

You do not want to see high electrical or magnetic activity when you are resting/sleeping! So what was causing the huge increase in electrical voltage in her body?

Remember we established that metal conducts electricity? Well, she did not have metal coils in her natural latex mattress, but as we took a closer look at her wooden bed we discovered that the wooden slats were held in place by a metal ledge that ran the entire perimeter of the bed.

We removed the bed frame and put her mattress on the floor in exactly the same spot, and her body voltage stayed nice and low. Wow.

Other Electrical Fields that may Affect Your Home

This article features a video where the engineer shows you his meter readings as he measures different types of fields (electrical, magnetic and microwave/cell tower) around his town. It also gives some good definitions:

  • The strength of an electric field is measured in volts per meter. Or kilovolts per meter.
  • Magnetic fields are present whenever current flows in a conductor, and are not voltage dependent. The level of these fields also decreases with distance from the source but these fields are not easily shielded.
  • Magnetic fields are measured in Webers per square meter (Tesla) or Maxwells per square centimeter (Gauss).
  • One Gauss = 10-4 Tesla. The most common unit for this application is milliGauss

But here are the REALLY relevant stats for our discussion:

  • 5 volts per meter are precautionary for sleeping areas.
  • 1-2 milliGauss is the precautionary level for human exposure.

Standing near the high voltage power line, it measures 14 milliGauss (magnetic field) and over 1300 volts per meter for electrical field.

There are people living all around high voltage power lines. So don’t expect electrical companies, government agencies, your city/town etc to provide you with unbiased data regarding electrical, magnetic, or cellphone radiation fields. It is 100% not in their interest to do so.

EMF meters can measure invisible areas of energy emitted from cell towers, wireless devices, cordless phone base stations, and even microwave ovens.

For example, standing near high-voltage power lines often results in dangerously high EMF levels, which scientific research links to increased risks for health issues like headaches, anxiety, insomnia, childhood leukemia, and even cancer.

According to studies cited by organizations like the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, long-term exposure to low-frequency and radiofrequency radiation from EMF-emitting devices significantly increases health risks.

Notably, children living close to high-voltage electrical wires have a significantly higher risk of childhood leukemia.

Known human signs of electromagnetic ill effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Prickling and/or burning skin
  • Rashes
  • Muscle pain
  • Cancer
  • Children living within 650 feet of power lines had a 70% greater risk for leukemia than children living 2,000 feet away or more. (British Medical Journal, June, 2005)
  • Miscarriage (Epidemiology, 2002 Jan; 13(1):9-20)
  • Neurodegenerative disease – several studies have identified occupational exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) as a potential risk factor for neurodegenerative disease. (Epidemiology 2003 Jul; 14(4):413-9)

“The human body contains free electric charges (largely in ion-rich fluids such as blood and lymph) that move in response to forces exerted by charges on, and currents flowing, in nearby power lines. The processes that produce these body currents are called electric and magnetic induction.

Electric field intensity exposure of about 1-10 mv/m in tissue interact with cells but have not proved to be harmful. But strong fields cause harmful effects when their magnitude exceeds stimulation thresholds for neural tissues (central nervous system and brain), muscle and heart” – Effects of High Voltage Transmission Lines on Humans and Plants

Those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while – or who have my Listen To Your Gut book – know that I’ve written a lot about the importance of keeping your home as free from EMR (microwave radiation) from cellphones and WiFi as you can. This is so you can have a healing environment in your home – or at the very least, while you sleep.

Create a Healthier Home

Here’s checklist of easy things you can do to reduce this electromagnetic burden on your body and give it the best chance to heal and stay healthy:

Unplug Devices in the Bedroom at Night

  • Unplug everything in your bedroom before you go to sleep including Wi-Fi routers and cordless telephones. Remember that plugging something in activates the electrical field, whether it is in use (turned on) or not.

Remove Metal from Your Bed

  • Remove metal from your bed frames and mattress to avoid electromagnetic waves conduction. Consider a traditional Japanese-style cotton futon on the floor. (I did it for years!)

Unplug Your WiFi Router

  • Turn your WiFi router off and unplug it from the wall when you go to sleep. Unplug it any other time you are not using it. Just turning if off will likely not work – most routers still emit radiation unless they are unplugged. Yes I’ve tested this.

Use Airplane Mode on Your Cellphone

  • Put your cellphone in Airplane mode any time you are not actively using it. And turn it off at night. If you can’t turn it off, then put it in another room, or as far away from your body as you can.
NOTE: Putting your phone in Airplane will not turn off your WiFi or Bluetooth, unless you set your phone up to do so. Normally, Airplane mode only turns off cellphone data.

Turn Off Bluetooth on All Devices

  • Regularly turn off Bluetooth on all electronic devices, including laptop computers and mobile phones, to minimize wireless radiation exposure. I tested the radiation from Bluetooth on my son’s computer, and it was much higher than the radiation from WiFi or his cellphone data. Who knew?? Turning off Bluetooth is the easiest way to cut your radiation exposure.
TIP: Many computers automatically turn on Bluetooth every time you restart them. So always double-check that it’s still turned off.

Home Internet

  • Switch to wired connections by using Ethernet cables rather than Wi-Fi connection for your internet. My good friend, Jeromy Johnson (engineer) has this great guide with step-by-step instructions.

Check Your Living Environment

  • Avoid living within 1,000 feet of cell towers and power lines, and ensure power lines to your house are grounded and shielded, ideally buried underground.
  • Do not live in a house where powerlines enter through the roof. The line coming from the city power pole to your house should be buried (grounded and shielded) between the city power pole and your house.
  • If living in apartments or condos, choose a corner unit away from rooftop Wi-Fi routers.
  • Get your house tested for EMF/EMR fields and exposure levels.
  • Consider EMF protection products, such as shielding material, Faraday cages that block radio waves and reduce EMF exposure.

Reducing EMF Exposure to Create a Safer, Healing Home Environment

Remember, electromagnetic fields are human-made sources and increasingly common in our daily lives due to the prevalence of modern technologies. But by increasing the distance from or not using EMF sources, like wireless earbuds, cordless phones, or even fluorescent lights, you significantly reduce your exposure.

Taking these precautions is a good idea backed by human studies showing potential connections between EMF exposure and health effects, including acoustic neuromas, brain tumors, and other types of cancer.

Though there’s limited evidence for some conditions, precautionary measures based on scientific research are wise.

reduce emf exposure at home and create a healing environment

If you’re overwhelmed, begin with the first step of unplugging electrical devices and increasing your home’s EMF safety. These simple steps help create a healing environment, reducing your health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation exposure.

If you don’t have my book, Listen To Your Gut (all of this and more is outlined in Chapter Four) then you can get my much shorter eBook/video/workbook guide for How To Create a Healing Environment.

In the video, I take you through all the rooms in my home – the kitchen is a big one – and show you what to do. The workbook contains all the checklists and action steps you need to take.
