Cod Liver Oil: The ‘Wonder Substance’
Hi, Linsy from LTYGShoppe, and today I want to talk to you about my favorite healthy fat, Cod Liver Oil! Cod liver oil has been lauded for centuries as a ‘wonder substance,’ and I truly feel it is! Let’s discuss the benefits of cod liver oil and how you can incorporate them into your daily routine.
Benefits of Cod Liver Oil
Jini actually took plenty of cod liver oil during her 3 pregnancies and breastfeeding because she felt it was so vital for fetal brain development. Her whole family takes these lemon flavor cod liver oil capsules every morning with their Vitamin D – they just pop them in their mouth and chew them – the lemon flavor masks everything and her youngest tries to sneak extra!
Some spit out the gel casings, but 2 of Jini’s kids just chew and swallow them. Jini also adds a Vitamin E capsule to hers, and these cod liver oil lemon-flavored capsules even mask that. Just remember to take with food! The suggested use is three capsules daily, or as directed by your health care professional or pharmacist.
Which brand of Cod Liver Oil to Use?
I like to take my Nordic Natural brand cod liver oil, which we carry in the LTYG shoppe, on a daily basis with my morning shake! It’s quick, easy, and helps me remember to get my daily doses in by having a routine!
I will often pop open the capsule and dump it into the shake, or into my mouth, or if I’m in a real hurry I just swallow the capsule with my food. It’s not necessary to open the capsules, so just take this product in a way that works for you!
Fish oil is an excellent source of bioavailable Omega-3s which are anti-inflammatory. It is recommended for cardiovascular health, improved blood viscosity, joint mobility, flexibility, healthy skin and hair, and memory function. It’s also essential for proper function of the immune and nervous systems.
Jini says that every person on this planet would benefit from taking cod liver oil or a fish oil supplement – but especially people with IBD and IBS!
Jini and I love Nordic Naturals because they use 100% Arctic cod livers in their cod liver oil formulas — no fish body oils or synthetic additives are ever used!
Arctic cod has the highest DHA, vitamin A, and vitamin D content of any cod species.
On average, Nordic Naturals cod liver oil delivers over 125 mg more DHA per serving than other cod liver oil products. Each serving provides over 600 mg of the essential omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, fulfilling the expert recommendation of a minimum of 500 mg per day.
This cod liver oil also contains only naturally-occurring Vitamin A and Vitamin D, and it does NOT contain gluten, milk derivatives, or artificial colors or flavors.
Know this before using Cod Liver Oil
A word of caution: However, as you don’t want to use fish oil if you are allergic to iodine, are using blood thinners, or anticipate surgery.
It’s also best to consult with your physician before taking fish oils if you are pregnant or diabetic. And of course, keep out of the reach of children!
And there you have it. I highly encourage you to add this AMAZING source of bioavailable Omega-3’s to your diet, as it’s been a game-changer for me!

I thought Jini’s ebook recommended UDO’s?
Hi Kay,
Great investigation skills! Love it! Yes, Jini does love Udo’s oil. It’s a combination oil that is very necessary to be added to the Absorb Plus shakes and/or on its own with other meals etc…
She and I are also fans of cod liver oil. Both of these are good healthy fat options. So depending on your meal, preference in liquids vs capsules, your fat tolerance, etc…you can choose either option!
Here Jini lists all the good healthy fat options and benefits:
